Police Academy Instructor (Johnstown)

Location: Richland Campus

Full or Part Time: Part-Time

Wage: $27.81 per hour

Job Scope

Develops and provides training sessions as part of the Police Academy curriculum.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  1. Develop lesson plans and training materials consistent with learning objectives established by MPOETC.
  2. Conduct training sessions as scheduled by the Director.
  3. Report on time and remain for the allotted time period for all teaching assignments.
  4. Participate in orientation session and complete required trainings.
  5. Maintain current certifications required by MPOETC to teach in the academy setting.
  6. Follow standards outlined in the Commission’s Academy Director and Instructor Code of Conduct.
  7. Assist in developing and implementing curriculum.
  8. Promote and create a professional classroom or instructional environment that supports and promotes a healthy, safe, and respectful atmosphere.
  9. Attendance at all mandatory meetings.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Instructors shall have graduated from one of the following training academies/programs:

  • The Federal Bureau of Investigations National Training Academy
  • The Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course
  • The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, GA
  • The Northwestern University Staff and Command School
  • Or other law enforcement training program approved by the Commission.
  • Instructors must complete the 40-hour Instructors Development Course or meet its equivalent.
  • All Instructors must be approved by MPOETC before being appointed as a general or special instructor.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • A minimum of four years’ experience working in law enforcement required.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills, be of strong moral character, and have the ability to work closely with the Director and Assistant Director to meet and comply with governing MPOETC defined curriculum for the Act 120 Basic Police Training Program and Mandatory In-Service Trainings (MIST).
  • Knowledge of student assessment tools, strategies, and modalities.

Computer Skills:

  • Working knowledge of MS Office.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34).
  • Any additional criminal background checks as required by MPOETC.
  • Must meet Pennsylvania Laws to carry a concealed firearm and be MPOETC certified to instruct as a General and/or Special Instructor at the Academy.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to stand and/or sit for prolonged periods of time up to one hour in duration, be capable of lifting 35-pounds, and be able to frequently operate a computer and a motor vehicle.
  • There are frequent occasions when classroom activities involve the instruction of physical conditioning and moving large bulky objects.
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Work Environment:

  • The work environment is normally quiet to moderate in noise level.
  • There are frequent occasions when classroom activities involve prolonged exposure to outside elements in all seasons.
  • Instructors will be exposed to firearms, ammunition, handcuffs, and various other law enforcement equipment.
