Tips For Success

  • Before the Semester Starts

    • Obtain your TEXTBOOKS by visiting the Bookstore.

      • Have your Student ID number handy, you can enter that into the Bookstore website to get a list of all your required books and materials.

    • Make sure you have access to a COMPUTER/LAPTOP and good internet connection to do your coursework.

    • Complete ORIENTATION.

      • It is highly recommended that you attend an in-person orientation session prior to the start of the semester. Watch your college email for your assigned date.
      • This is mandatory; you won’t be able to register for the next semester without completing Orientation.
      • If you have difficulty attending your assigned date, Email the Student Activities office or call 814.262.6491.

    • Get your STUDENT ID CARD.

      • ID Cards are now digital and can be accessed on the myPEAK portal.
      • The digital Student ID Card will allow students to check out library books, take makeup tests, get discounts via Peak Pass, etc.

      • This is our text broadcast system for alerts on delays and emergencies.

    • Apply for FINANCIAL AID.

      • Complete your FAFSA. Our School Code is 031804.  Don’t forget to apply for a PHEAA grant!
      • Remember to factor the cost of books and childcare into your budget.
      • Review your financial aid awards, documents, and tracking on myPEAK, under Student Financial Services.

    • Explore STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES.

      • If you utilized an IEP in high school or are requesting accommodations in college, please contact Mike Lucas, Accessibility Specialist, at 814.262.6468 or Email Mike Lucas.
      • If you receive TANF or SNAP, you may be eligible for KEYS (Keystone Education Yields Success). Call 814.262.6420 for details.
      • Unsure of your major? Visit with our Sr. Advising Specialist, Ben Mostoller, at 814.262.6457 or Email Ben to explore majors, careers, and program clusters.

    • Plan for all personal RESPONSIBILITIES.

      • Arrange transportation to class.
      • Coordinate with work regarding your new class schedule.
      • If needed, arrange childcare for your children and create a backup plan.

  • First Week of the Semester

      • Review your work, life, and school schedules carefully. Explore if it will work for you. If not, adjust during the add/drop period.

      • This is the online learning system that will be used for all of your classes. Consider downloading the Pulse App for your cell phone.

    • Review your SYLLABUS.

      • Be aware of important dates (due dates for homework, papers & exams). Place these important dates in a planner for future reference or use the electronic calendar on your smartphone

      • Email is the primary way instructors and staff will be communicating with you.
      • Download the Outlook App today to your smart phone!
      • Your college e-mail address is your username @pennhighlands.edu (same password you use for myPEAK).

      • Your academic advisor is noted on this page along with other important degree information.
      • Email your advisor to schedule a meeting during their office hours before Priority Registration.
      • Check your degree audit on myPEAK. Review the schedule. Prepare for your first meeting with your advisor.

      • Get a tutor at the first sign of difficulty in the course. The Writing/Math Center in Richland provides free tutoring for students both in-person and via Zoom. Tutoring is available in other subjects and at all locations (in-person or Zoom). Click here for details.

    • Get INVOLVED!

      • Try something new. Check out the clubs and organizations available, as well as athletics available at our Richland Campus (bowling, basketball, softball, golf, eSports, volleyball, and cross country).
      • Look for e-mails about the Club and Organization Fair!
