What are the traits of a successful online student?
To succeed in an online learning environment, certain qualities and skills can make all the difference.
Being comfortable with technology and open to learning new systems is crucial. Good time management and organization help you stay on track, while self-motivation keeps you focused on your goals. Strong reading comprehension skills and the ability to follow directions ensure you can understand and complete assignments effectively.
Lastly, being willing to ask questions and regularly communicating with instructors fosters clarity and support throughout your learning experience.
How much time do online courses take?
In online courses, the line between “class” time and “study” time often blurs together. On average, students should plan to dedicate six to nine hours per week to a course. However, this can vary based on factors such as reading speed, comprehension, computer proficiency, and how quickly you grasp the course material.
Do I need to be online at a certain time?
While there’s no requirement to be online at specific times, it’s strongly advised to check your online courses daily to stay on top of deadlines. All course materials and updates can be found on Brightspace.
Do I need a textbook for an online course?
Many courses require materials available in multiple formats, such as print copies or eBooks. In some cases, educational software may supplement or replace traditional textbooks. For detailed material requirements, visit the Bookstore website.
How do I access my online course?
Brightspace is the College’s Learning Management System, providing seamless access to all courses through the myPEAK portal. After registering for classes, students can explore a Brightspace tutorial designed to guide them in navigating their online courses with ease.
Will my online courses transfer?
Online courses appear on your academic transcript just like traditional in-person classes.
With over 160 transfer agreements, Penn Highlands makes transferring credits seamless. If your institution isn’t listed on our transfer page, our dedicated Transfer Specialists are here to help you maximize the credits you can transfer.
As an institution accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, Penn Highlands holds regional accreditation, ensuring broad transferability of courses. However, it’s always a good idea to consult with your transfer institution to confirm how specific classes align with your degree requirements.
What technology do I need to have (or have access to) for my online courses?
For the best experience, we recommend using a Windows computer running Windows 10 or 11. Devices like Chromebooks, smartphones, iPads, Surfaces, and other tablets may not meet the requirements. In particular, Chromebooks are incompatible with lockdown browsers and should be avoided. Additionally, a stable broadband internet connection is essential for success.
Do online courses contain recorded lectures?
In an online course, the instructor serves as a guide rather than a traditional lecturer, placing the responsibility for learning squarely on you. Course materials, including textbooks, lesson content, presentations, videos, and websites, provide the foundation for your studies. While some instructors may include recorded lectures, the structure and delivery of each course can differ, offering a unique learning experience every time.
How will my classes be structured?
All classes are structured with modules that may include the following components:
- Discussion boards
- Quizzes and exams (some may require a lockdown browser)
- Reading assignments
- Video content
Many courses also integrate third-party courseware from providers like McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and Cengage. For detailed information about course materials, please refer to the course syllabus.
How do I contact my instructor?
The most effective way to reach your instructor is by sending an email through your Penn Highlands email account. Be sure to check your course page on Brightspace, as instructors often provide specific communication guidelines there.
Is tutoring available for online courses?
Absolutely! Tutoring is available 24/7 through Tutor.com. You can also schedule one-on-one virtual tutoring sessions via Zoom through the Student Success Center.
