When Matthew Knepper’s son asked him a simple question — “Dad, how are you getting better?” — he knew that words alone wouldn’t be enough. As a husband, father of two, and driven professional, Matthew turned to Penn Highlands Community College to pursue his degree on his own terms. What began as a challenge from his son became a defining moment, a reminder that it’s never too late to invest in yourself and lead by example for those who matter most.

Meet Matthew Knepper, 2026 Graduate

Tell us about yourself?

As a 36-year-old Business Management student at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, I balance academics with being a dedicated father of two and a proud husband of 14 years. At the heart of everything I do is a desire to make a meaningful difference in the world and inspire those around me to reach their full potential.

Why did you choose Penn Highlands?

Penn Highlands stood out to me for several reasons: its affordable tuition, the flexibility of completing my degree online at my own pace, and the added convenience of a nearby campus whenever I need in-person access.

How has Penn Highlands impacted your life?

I believe Pennsylvania Highlands Community College has made me a stronger candidate for future promotions and contributed to my success in my current career. I now have the knowledge and experience to positively influence and support others at work and in my community.

What activities were you involved in?

While my focus was on online classes, I also got involved with the National Society of Leadership and Success. It was a great experience that gave me plenty of opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

What were some of the best things about attending Penn Highlands?

The class that inspired me most was CIT100, taught by Gregory Paonessa. As the first course I took at Penn Highlands, it gave me a strong foundation, equipping me with the skills to navigate my classes and use my computer effectively for assignments. Professor Paonessa was consistently encouraging and remained a generous source of support even after I had completed his class.

I also formed a meaningful connection with Professor Sandy Schrum. Her warm and upbeat nature made even the most challenging assignments and exams feel approachable. Her dedication to walking students through exam answers and offering thoughtful feedback on written work was instrumental in my academic success.

What are your future plans?

Upon completing my A.A.S. in Business Management, I plan to continue my education through the 3+1 program, working towards a bachelor’s degree in either Business Administration or Human Resources Management.

Anything important you wish to share with others?

From academic advising and financial aid to tutoring and the support of my professors, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College provided every resource and encouragement I needed to thrive.
