Frequently Asked Questions 1. What time should we arrive at the Allegheny Portage Railroad NHS? The event begins at 10:00 a.m. so you should plan to be at the park site and in your groups by 10:00 a.m. 2. What time will the event conclude? The event is scheduled to conclude at 2:00 p.m. in the case of inclement weather there will be an adjusted schedule that may result in an earlier dismissal. 3. What if there is inclement weather? 1845 Days will take place rain or shine. In the case of rain, all events will be moved inside as appropriate (black powder demonstrations are outdoors). There will also be an adjustment made to the day’s events which may result in not all groups seeing each station. This will happen in order to ensure that each group will get to see the author's presentation. Students should dress appropriately and wear rain gear and carry umbrellas if the weather is calling for rain. If it doesn't rain, items can be left on the bus.

4. What about lunch? Students should bring a lunch with them. Lunches will be left on the bus until it is time to eat. All students will eat lunch in the park's amphitheatre. If there is inclement weather students will eat their lunches on their school buses. 5. How will we move between stations (groups) Each school will be divided into groups of approximately 50 students each. For schools that bring fewer than 50 students you may be combined with other schools to make your group total 50. Each group will receive colored buttons for the students to wear. The purpose of the buttons is to facilitate movement between stations and to help keep the groups together. Each group will have a group leader that will take each group from station-to-station. 6. Will copies of the book be available for sale? There will be copies of the books for sale. The cost will be posted to this website. Books can be purchased with cash or check. No credit cards, please. The author will be available to sign the book the day of the event. 7. What are the stations? There will be 10 stations set-up throughout the park and consisting of presentations by park rangers and guest speakers on aspects of life in Cambria County in 1845 and the impact of Irish immigration. In some cases students will participate in hands-on demonstrations. All stations are designed to be conducted within a 20-minute session.
