The Johnstown Area Genealogical and Historical Society was founded in 1980. Originally named the Windber-Johnstown Area Genealogical Society the mission of the organization is to provide access to materials on the history of the region and to enable members to research their family backgrounds and trace their roots.
The Society maintains a collection of materials that are available in the Library at the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College's Richland location. Materials include family histories, U.S. Census records for Cambria and some surrounding counties, The Johnstown Democrat on microfilm from 1853 to 1935 and online genealogical databases.

The Society publishes a newsletter called The Crest. The Crest is printed quarterly and is mailed to all members. Articles may be mailed to Elaine Adams, P.O. Box 5048, Johnstown, PA 15904-5048, or may be emailed to Kelly Moyer at Kmoyer08@hotmail.com

Membership dues are: CORPORATE $250.00, BENEFACTOR $100.00, CONTRIBUTING $35.00, INDIVIDUAL $10.00, FAMILY $15.00, STUDENT (School or College full-time) $5.00.

Digital Collection - This link contains materials that have been digitized from the collection housed in the library. Materials include digitized photographs and texts.
Links - These links are to Internet sites to assist researchers in finding additional information or to locate professional help in conducting research.
Obituaries - This link is to spreadsheets containing lists of obituaries from the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat from 2001-2007
Online Databases - The online databases that are available include Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest. These databases are available only to Society members. If you are a member and wish to access these databases you must contact the President of the Society.
Immigration - Contains the Immigration and Naturalization Index for Cambria County for 1835-1991. Records are available at the Cambria County Records Center.
Surnames - The Surname list contains two parts. Part one is a list of all the surnames being researched by members of the Society. Part two is a list of contact information for those researchers.
The Society is emphasizing its "Sponsor a Book" program. The program allows those who care about preserving family histories and the local heritage to sponsor books from our "wish list" in memory or honor of a loved one, or just to make a freewill donation toward the purchase of a book.
The "Sponsor a Book" program is a wonderful way to memorialize loved ones whose histories we are searching so diligently. A personalized bookplate will be placed in the front of each sponsored book.
