Service Worker (Casual Part-Time)

This is routine and repetitive manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning and occasional minor maintenance tasks.  Under the immediate direction of the Facilities Supervisor, Service Workers perform a wide variety of tasks which include the cleaning and upkeep of the College’s facilities.  They are responsible for furniture and equipment moving and setup as needed.  The position requires the ability to operate custodial equipment; flexibility of movement; and ability to lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects. As an essential position must report to work at times when the College is closed or delayed in opening.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (Other duties may be assigned):

  1. As an essential position must report to work at times when the College is closed or delayed in opening.
  2. Works a schedule of jobs as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor.  Duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning, painting, installing, landscaping, snow removal, operating custodial equipment, moving furniture, setting up equipment and other general maintenance duties.
  3. Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms and kitchens using established practices and procedures.
  4. Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  5. Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  6. Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas within sixteen feet of buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  7. Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
  8. Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  9. Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
  10. Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments.
  11. Assist with snow removal.
  12. Attend to emergencies when necessary.
  13. May lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  14. Performs duties as listed on task assignment sheets.
  15. Reports any maintenance needs or concerns to the Facilities Supervisor.
  16. Performs all duties to standards set by the College.
  17. Maintains a clean and safe work area at all times.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor, Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services, or designee.
  19. Ability and endurance necessary to work the hours needed to complete the job.
  20. Attendance at all mandatory meetings.
  21. Regular attendance.

  • Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence. 
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills:  Minimal.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Criminal Background Clearance, Valid PA Drivers License.
  • Other Qualifications: Ability to report to work during times when the College may be closed or delayed in opening.  Must be willing to submit to random drug testing or for cause.

Starting rate of $8.50/hour. Interviews will begin immediately.
