Director of the Student Success Center
The Director provides leadership and vision, planning, coordination, supervision and evaluation of the Student Success Center and related student support services, including but not limited to academic counseling and advising, personal counseling, disability services, and career counseling and placement services. The Director also serves an integral role in the College’s retention efforts.
Responsibilities and Scope of Functions:
- Develops and evaluates the comprehensive counseling, student support and development, advising, orientation, and retention programs for students;
- Ensures optimal integration of counseling, advising, and student support services with all components of the College to ensure student success;
- Provides supervision and leadership to the Student Success Center Staff;
- Advises students on academic matters ranging from selecting a program of study and developing academic plans to schedule-building and registration; Also assists students with planning transfer to four-year institutions;
- Coordinates the assignment of students’ academic advisors and faculty advising loads as per established guidelines;
- Develops and continually updates a handbook of procedures and resources to support effective advising; conducts educational sessions for faculty advisors to promote effective academic advising and employ best practices;
- Assesses prior learning and life experience and communicates results;
- Assists the Registrar with certification of the completion of requirements for graduation;
- Coordinates career services programming, career placement services, and actively participates in creating long-term employer partnerships;
- Implements and coordinates the planning and systematic evaluation of the array of counseling and related programs and services assigned;
- Develops staffing priorities, hiring and conducts evaluations for those areas supervised;
- Manages financial resources within the areas of responsibility with fiscal responsibility and accountability; develops budgetary priorities and makes recommendations to the Vice President;
- Facilitates the development of technology-based counseling services and tools to support student access and success;
- Implements innovative approaches and solutions to meet the needs of a diverse and rapidly growing student population for ensuring student success and retention;
- Coordinates the development of studies, including student and department learning outcomes, to measure the effectiveness of counseling and advising programs and services including assistance with data gathering, analysis and report preparation;
- Designs and actively participates in activities which optimize the effectiveness of the College’s programs for student success and retention;
- Designs and implements early warning and intervention strategies for at risk students;
- Develops and implements seminars and workshops to support the growth and development of the students;
- Recommends policy and procedures;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President.
- Ability and endurance necessary to work the hours needed to complete the job.
Qualifications and Expectations:
- Master’s degree required in counseling, education, or related field from an accredited higher education institution. Three (3) years of higher education experience in counseling or student services preferred.
- Knowledgeable and sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population. Possess the ability to maintain strong collegial relationships. Demonstrate a strong student-centered philosophy and a team approach to providing services. Excellent leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in various forms and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Ability to utilize computer for research. Knowledge of College specific systems preferred.
