Each year, the Foundation supports numerous areas including: scholarships, programs, facilities, and faculty development. Foundation’s Unrestricted Endowment
Your unrestricted gift will be matched by the federal Title III matching grant from 2011 – 2015. In September of 2011, The U.S. Department of Education awarded Pennsylvania Highlands Community College a Title III grant. This five year grant has provided funding for faculty development, expansion of the first year experience program, the creation of a career services office, and more. In addition, the grant provides matching funds for the further development of the College’s Foundation. These matching grant dollars have been placed into an endowment fund that, in the 5 year grant period, will grow to approximately $200,000.
One Book Middle School Reading Program
Penn Highlands is proud to host the only One Book One Community program in the area. The Foundation works with coordinator, Dr. Barbara Zaborowski, to locate funding for this project. More than 1,200 students, teachers, and parents participate each year and learn history related to the chosen book through hands-on activities. A significant amount of the donations received are made by College employees and the College itself donates the use of its building and the volunteer time of over 40 College employees.
Donors can designate their contributions for use at our locations in Blair, Huntingdon, and Somerset Counties. The College has developed tremendous support in these areas as we continue to build student enrollment and positive relationships with businesses and community members.
Each year scholarships are awarded to deserving students who meet the guidelines of the endowed scholarships administered by the Foundation. Donors to the Foundation are free to make a pledge that adds to an already existing endowment fund or start one of their own. Pledges can be paid in quarterly or annual installments for up to five years. Endowments are a great way to provide a legacy of learning for the community or to honor a loved one. Only the interest earned from the original endowment is utilized to fund the scholarships, ensuring that your donation is a permanent gift. Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program
The Foundation acts as the administrator of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program operated by the College. The Foundation receives donations from local businesses that assist in supporting the Accelerated College Education program, which allows high school students to earn college credits in advance of their high school graduation. These donations allow the cost of the courses to be reduced, making this an affordable opportunity for students to experience college level classes while still in the high school classroom.
